Gifts for Dog Moms Who Already Own Everything

The difficulty with buying a gift for a dog mom is that the dog already has everything. Three beds. A coat for rain and a coat for cold. A drawer. So the good gift is almost never for the dog.

It is for her, and it should acknowledge the dog without being a novelty item she quietly rehomes in March.

The test a good dog-mom gift has to pass

Would she use it if the dog were not part of the joke? If the answer is no, it is a novelty. Novelties get one photograph and a shelf.

A sweatshirt she reaches for on a cold morning passes. A mug with a cartoon and a pun on it does not, because she has four.

Under $50 — the safe, good one

$50 to $80 — the one she will actually wear

A garment-dyed sweatshirt. The reliable winner, with two caveats. Size up rather than down — the cut is relaxed and nobody has ever complained a sweatshirt was too comfortable. And pick a colour that is not her dog's colour; matching reads as costume.

If you know her dog's breed, a breed-specific graphic lands harder than a generic one. A dachshund owner will notice a dachshund. Everyone notices when you did not bother.

Over $80 — the one that looks like you thought about it

A large art print, framed. Buy the 18 by 24, buy a plain oak frame, and give it framed. The framing is the gift. It moves the whole thing from a nice thought to an object in her home.

Or the sweatshirt and the matching print. The same illustration on both, one to wear and one to hang. It is the closest this list gets to a grand gesture.

What to avoid

Anything that has to be personalised with the dog's name, unless you have checked the spelling twice — and a surprising number of dogs have names spelled in ways you would not guess.

Anything sized for the dog. You do not know the measurements and neither does she.

Anything described as a novelty. If the product page says novelty, it is telling you what will happen to it.

On timing
